Level 2 : Reading Korean Words - A Comprehensive Guide with Examples

by 사랑해널 2024. 6. 1.

Reading Korean words is an exciting step in your language learning journey.

Once you've grasped the basics of Hangeul, the Korean alphabet, you can start deciphering words and understanding their meanings.

How to read Korean words effectively

Syllable Blocks

  • Building Blocks: Korean words are formed by combining individual syllables, each written as a block. These blocks can consist of two to four letters, representing a consonant-vowel (CV) or consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) structure.
  • Reading Direction: Read Korean words from left to right and top to bottom, just like English.

Decoding Syllables

  1. Identify the Initial Consonant: The first letter in a syllable block is the initial consonant (choseong). Recognize its shape and sound.
  2. Locate the Vowel: The vowel (jungseong) can be positioned either to the right (vertical vowels) or below (horizontal vowels) the initial consonant. Identify its shape and sound.
  3. Check for a Final Consonant: If there's a letter at the bottom of the syllable block, it's the final consonant (jongseong). Remember that final consonants can change their sound depending on the following sound.
